 English Text

Last Sunday we had a visit from the ’Martha and Mary’ shop from our parishchurch of St. Mary’s. The shop sells religious article; for example rosaries, icons, crosses and crucifixes. The shop has Line as its daily leader; you can see her here busily serving Jan, who used the chance to buy many things. Line supplies her shop through members of the congregation in Aalborg, who, on their journeys to different parts of the world, bring back wares when they return from their travels.

FatherJude is the originator of the shop’s name which is of course inspired by the gospel account of the two sisters who were visited by Jesus. Whilst Martha busied herself with the practical chores around the house Mary was preoccupied with Jesus. Father Jude has pointed out the necessity for both types of people illustrated in the gospel: To run a shop (the practical work) encourages spiritual activities; e.g. reciting the Rosary, prayer and other activities which benefit the congregation. During the first few months of the shop it had already earned so much money (6000 crowns) that it could invest it in a new carpet for the sacristy in Aalborg. The profits from the sale here in Frederikshavn were about 800 crowns. (I did hear that over 2000 crowns were earned in Hjørring!)

We wish Line all the best with her shop and look forward to seeing her again in the near future.

Mark.
